UC Davis Orchestra

Yesterday, I went with a friend/neighbor and her son (who used to a fellow student of my cello teacher) and her mother to a rehearsal of the UC Davis Orchestra. Actually, it was her son’s Junior High School Orchestra field trip and she was a parent volunteer. She just had us tag along for the fun of it. We went in at the intermission and got to hear the tail end of a grad student composition plus Shumann’s Cello Concerto in A minor (at least I think that’s what it was.) The grad student piece was rather odd, involving lots of bouncing the stick of the bow off the strings, which despite the entire string section doing so, hardly produced any sound whatsoever. The Shumann piece was great to listen to and featured a faculty member who I really enjoyed listening to. I also found out that anybody can be a member of the orchestra, not just students (which explains why a faculty member was part of it.) This also means that once I am good enough I can audition to be part of it too. So that is an eventual goal now.
